Some public libraries are run by library boards that consist of elected officials or appointed officials. In addition to loaning out books to the general public, public libraries often loan DVDs, video tapes and other multi-media items out. There are many different types of libraries that you might want to use if you need to perform research. You might choose a local public library in your community, a library connected to your school, or a private library that requires a membership. Regardless of the type of library that you choose, you should make sure they offer all of the services that you need. Most public libraries give you the opportunity to use these services free of charge, but your school or private library might charge some money. If you want to discover the services that your community public library offers, then you should contact the main branch to ask them a few questions. Ask the central lending library if they have an online catalog so that you can look at their books from home. The help desk should be able to give patrons log on information that gives you access to electronic newspapers, reference materials, presidential decrees, virtual catalogs, and digital book lending information that you can use for research. Ask them if they have computers that you can use at your local branch. You should also make sure that the city library has copying and printing machines. If you are checking out a book, you should be certain to ask them when it is due so that they city’s public library does not charge you a fine. If you do not know if you have fines, then ask them if you can access your account on the Internet to check the balance.
