FEATURED ADVERTISERS:   LIBRARIES_INSTITUTIONAL
Institutional libraries are collections of written materials and repositories and access points for maps, prints or other artwork, microfilm, microfiche, audio tapes, CDs, LPs, video tapes and DVDs, that are located at and/or owned by an institution of some type. Institutional libraries include libraries at schools, prisons & other correctional facilities, hospitals & medical centers, and other institutions. Institutional libraries are very important to meet the needs of students, inmates, patients and all others who live, stay or make use of our nation's institutions. Many institutional libraries offer reading and literacy programs and workshops for their patrons, such as prisoners' reading encouragement programs; literacy & learning disabilities workshops; “read-to-me” children's programs, and job accommodations networks.
Your local library might not have all of the research, records, medical science journals, and other types of media and information that you need. Instead of solely relying on your local libraries, you should consider contacting institutional libraries as well that might have a repository and archive of the documents and materials that you need for your research. Institutional libraries are usually owed by corporate sponsors, government offices, medical schools, and colleges. Many of them not only have a repository that locals can use, but digital research materials as well that can be accessed by anyone who has the software to access their information. Finding a university system, government agency, or corporate sponsor that owns the research materials that you need is not always difficult. Start by looking in your online directory to find local institutions that have libraries that are open to the public. Contact them and find out if they have digital media. Electronic media is useful because you can access it without actually going to the campus to find the academic and science articles that you need. Instead, you search for source materials like books and recordings online. Many libraries are cataloging their materials in digital records so that they are easier to use for those in remote locations. Ask the libraries if they have the materials that you are interested in. You should also find out if they charge for using their services. You will probably find that some of the institutions that you can contact will have patron fees while others are free.
